David Gemmell is a South African author, speaker and businessman. He writes and speaks about depression from personal experience, having lived with it for most of his adult life.

His best-selling book Joost: The Man in the Mirror was the authorised biography of Springbok rugby captain Joost van der Westhuizen, written during the final years of van der Westhuizen's life with motor neurone disease. He is currently completing his next book, There are no depressed people on a sinking life raft, on the causes and cures of depression.
